THIRD PASTORAL LETTER FOR THE JUBILEE OF 2025
I ask not only on behalf of these but also on behalf of those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. (John 17: 20-23)
TERM | MEANING |
Universalism | Everyone, ultimately, is saved. |
Particularism | Some people are saved, but others are not and never will be. |
(optimistic form) | Our universal default destiny, from the moment of our conception, is salvation. This salvation, however, may be lost through sin. |
(pessimistic form) | Our universal default setting, from the moment of our conception, is not salvation. Individuals may switch to the path of salvation, such as by baptism and/or a personal act of faith. |
(mixed form) | Some people are, by default, on the path of salvation, and others are not. Variants in this view often do not allow for a person to switch from path one to the other. |
Universal loss | No one is saved. There is no eternal sharing of the divine life. |
